Chapter 41

MADELINE

The weapons room is located high in the Requiem Mountains for ease of access for the dragons.

Slaves are rarely permitted entry for obvious reasons; while even armed slaves are unlikely to defeat dragons, it’s in no one’s interest if they all get slaughtered during an uprising.

I find myself scanning the room for dragons, but there is only one girl in the corner, polishing a knife diligently.

I waltz in, confident I will be able to take a weapon and she won’t be able to stop me. We might both be slaves, but I am Hael’s personal slave. That puts me above her in the hierarchy…right?

The room isn’t very wide but is staggeringly tall—literally stories high.

Weapons line every inch of it, with spiral steps carved into the rock that wind their way around the walls so you can walk up as high as is necessary.

“Oh, yes,” I mumble to myself as I inspect a collection of knives close to where the slave girl is working.

She looks up, and I stop dead in my tracks. It is the same girl that had been ordered to take me to Elisha earlier.

I hadn’t recognized her at first because she’d had her head bent down, her long, straggly, brown hair covering her features.

“Hey—”

Just as I’m about to smile and acknowledge her, she jumps to her feet, clutching the large knife in her white-knuckled fist, and rushes at me.

I’m so shocked, I don’t move, and she closes the distance in seconds and holds the tip of the knife to my throat.

“You thought it’d be funny to come and gloat?” she snarls, unblinking.

I focus on her peculiar eyes: one violet, one green. Strange.

I glare back at her, feeling both afraid and confused. “What the hell are you talking about?”

She is furious, and I don’t know why.

“You’re wearing my clothes,” she hisses. “Give them back to me. They’re not yours!”

“I didn’t realize,” I blurt, holding up my hands in surrender. “I’m so sorry but I don’t know if taking them off will mean you get to keep them.

“You have to wear slave clothes. If you take them, they’ll probably just burn them to teach you a lesson. Please, don’t get angry, I’m just speaking from experience—”

“I don’t want your advice, Princess.” She slowly lowers her knife and looks me up and down. “Why are you here? I thought you were on a date with the dragon scum of this mountain.”

“Shhh,” I hiss. “I’m running from him right now, and he could be right around that corner. I need a weapon.” I move around her, remembering Hael. “And he’s not scum.”

Her laugh drips with sarcasm, so I furrow my eyebrows as I move closer to the knives. I don’t understand how someone like her can be so cocky and aggressive; she looks younger than me!

“Don’t you know anything?” she asks. “He won’t just walk around that corner. He’ll take his time. Stalk you until you are a paranoid mess, looking over your shoulder every two seconds.”

“You know him well, do you?” I ask, suddenly feeling a little stab of jealousy.
